@drwalt From the standpoint of Silicon Valley I don’t think they really care whether the route for you to post on their website involves you logging in directly or routing the content through some preliminary pipes, they still get to bundle it into their algorithmic generated feeds designed to keep other users on the platform. Some platforms build their walled gardens higher than others. In that framing I’m just shoveling more coal into the furnace but with an extra shovel handle tapped to the first. A pure principled stand would involve a full de-coupling of a personal web presence from any social platform. I think POSSE is more focused on giving some agency back to users. I can take my feed from MB and go elsewhere. In theory I could do the same by requesting my data from Facebook or BSKY or X, but I don’t have the technical expertise to extract the JS files where all that material is stored and getting it posted elsewhere. A platform like MB (from my limited subject matter expertise) appears to better let me keep my options open and I feel some satisfaction in spending my subscription dollars propping up a possible alternative to those larger surveillance capitalists.

It’s early days, but if federated photosharing sites like Grain can gain enough critical mass I think all our timelines and feed content consumption would be better off.
