If you live in an American town, it probably has a family-run Chinese restaurant with a name like Lucky Garden or Hunan Wok, which serves tasty, unsophisticated Chinese fare. Not long ago we got some take-out from our local (New York Garden!): stir-fried veggies & tofu slathered with the brown goo that seems to be universal in such places. I thought: how hard can it be to make this stuff? So I found a good recipe for the goo, and now I make it in quantity. It stores well in the fridge. You can saute some veggies, stir in some goo, serve on rice, and have a tasty “Chinese” meal in 15 minutes.
